Open Source Engineer

Zed is a code editor built from scratch in Rust. As the community grows, so does the volume of issues, feature requests, and contributions from developers using Zed every day.
As an Open Source Engineer, you'll work on features requested by the community, curate issues suitable for contributions, and review community pull requests. Much of this work happens collaboratively: pairing with teammates, jumping into shared editing sessions with contributors, and working alongside AI agents to explore fixes and test ideas.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement features requested by the community
- Fix bugs important to the community
- Make every change reinforce Zed's speed and clean UI
- Review community pull requests, knowing when to merge, request changes, pair with the author, or close with a clear explanation
- Curate the backlog of bugs and features suitable for contributors to tackle
- Pair with engineers across the company to learn different parts of the codebase
- Use AI tools alongside the editor to explore solutions, prototype ideas, and speed up development
- Help improve our GitHub processes and tooling
Requirements
- Strong programming skills and problem-solving ability
- Proficiency in Rust
- Excellent written English and strong spoken English for pair programming and community communication
- Enthusiasm for open source and collaborative development
- User empathy and a strong desire to make Zed better for our users
Preferred Experience
- Prior contributions to Zed
