Open Source Engineer

Zed is a next-generation code editor that's engineered from scratch in Rust to be fast, elegant, and collaborative. As our community grows, so does our backlog of issues and feature requests. We're looking for talented developers to help us tackle these challenges by joining our team.

You'll be part of Zed's Open Source team who's responsible for working on features requested by the community, curating the issues suitable for contributions, reviewing the community's pull requests, and more.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement features that the community will love
  • Work strategically on fixing bugs important to the community
  • Make every change reinforce Zed's speed and clean UI
  • Review pull requests from the community, knowing when it's best to merge, request a change, pair with the author, or close with a polite yet informative comment
  • Curate the backlog of the bugs and features suitable for the contributors to tackle (whether it's a first-timer or a seasoned community champion)
  • Pair with the engineers across the company to learn different parts of the codebase
  • Help improve our GitHub processes and tooling

Requirements

  • Strong programming skills and problem-solving ability
  • Proficiency in Rust
  • English: excellent in writing, strong in speaking (for effective pair programming and smooth communication with the community)
  • Enthusiasm for open source and collaborative development
  • User empathy and a strong desire to make Zed better for our users
  • Nice to have: candidates who have closed issues by contributing to Zed
