Use Your ChatGPT Subscription in Zed

You can now sign in to Zed's agent with your ChatGPT account and use OpenAI's models directly in Zed, with the same usage you benefit from in Codex directly. Codex is included with every ChatGPT subscription, with usage determined by your tier.

Why This Matters Right Now

End user costs for agentic coding are changing fast. Anthropic just announced Agent SDK credits billed separately from their subscription rate limits starting June 15, and GitHub Copilot is moving entirely to usage-based billing on June 1.

We're excited to work with OpenAI to buck the above trends, and offer cost-effective inference in your harness of choice. Your ChatGPT plan lets you use OpenAI's models through the subscription you already have, with usage included rather than billed per token.

How to Set It Up

Open the model selector in the agent panel and click "Configure." Sign in with your ChatGPT account under LLM Providers, and available models will appear in the dropdown.

Use OpenAI's Models However You Want

Zed and OpenAI believe in meeting you where you are, and making it possible to use agentic tools however you want to use them:

Through Zed's agent. Sign in with your ChatGPT account and OpenAI's models run through Zed's built-in agent, with the usage you get in Codex directly.
Through ACP. We built an ACP adapter to bring Codex into Zed, JetBrains, or any ACP-compatible client as an external agent.
Through the CLI. Run the Codex CLI in a Zed terminal, and soon, run many in parallel with Terminal Threads.
You can bring your OpenAI API key. If you or your company prefer usage-based billing, you can bring your own key.
